The Indian hockey team created history by winning the bronze medal in the Paris Olympics. India won the bronze medal by defeating Spain 2-1 and repeated the 52-year-old history of winning medals in back-to-back Olympics. Earlier, the Indian hockey team had won bronze medals in the 1968 and 1972 Olympics. Goalkeeper PR Sreejesh played an important role in getting India the second bronze medal within 4 years, who said goodbye to hockey with this historic victory. Sreejesh had already indicated that this Olympics would be his last international tournament. In this way, Captain Harmanpreet’s brilliant Indian hockey team gave Sreejesh a great farewell in the form of a medal.
Sreejesh, who made his international debut in 2006, played brilliantly in the quarter-final match of the Paris Olympics and made many brilliant saves when the Indian team was struggling to stop Great Britain after Amit Rohidas was shown a red card. In this match, the legendary Indian goalkeeper stood like a wall in front of the Indian goal post and took rest only after taking the Indian team to the semi-finals. Here the Indian team may not have been able to overcome Germany, but in the bronze medal against Spain, Sreejesh once again proved why he is called the world’s best goalkeeper.
Sreejesh is exceptional
After the Indian team won the bronze medal, there is only one name on everyone’s lips – PR Sreejesh. India’s great cricketer Sachin Tendulkar has also wished Sreejesh a grand farewell. Sachin wrote on the post, “You have maintained your goal wholeheartedly for so many years. Your dedication, commitment and enthusiasm towards the game have always been unmatched. In this Olympics, especially in the match against Great Britain, where we played for about 42 minutes with 10 players, you performed brilliantly. Indian hockey is very happy to have you with us. Thank you for your sacrifice. Best wishes to you for the second part of your life and career.”
Sreejesh’s farewell can be compared to that of Sachin Tendulkar. Sachin
