New Delhi: It is said that there is no religion greater than humanity. Only humanity can bridge the gap between Hindus and Muslims. This time a Hindu has done such a thing for a Muslim man, knowing which you will also salute him. Yes, giving an example of humanity, a Hindu family donated the liver of their brain-dead son to save the life of a disabled Muslim man suffering from liver cirrhosis. Cirrhosis is a condition in which the liver gets scarred and it gets damaged forever.
Doctors at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital diagnosed Mohammad Abrar with hepatitis B. He also showed symptoms of liver cirrhosis, including jaundice, ascites (swelling of the abdomen due to accumulation of fluid) and internal bleeding. Despite his physical challenges, Abrar led an active life, working at his shop and participating in all social activities. As his condition worsened, it affected his personal and professional life badly.
In this case, Anil Arora, chairman of medical gastroenterology, recommended an immediate liver transplant. Abrar’s condition was further complicated by long-standing cirrhosis, lung and heart problems, making this a particularly high-risk surgery. The surgery was also made difficult by the damage to Abrar’s right limb from polio, which limited space for the operation.
However, he got a new lease of life from a brain-dead young man in the same hospital. His family decided to donate his organs to save Abrar, showing that humanity can often come to the fore even in the most unexpected circumstances. Abrar was discharged after a 15-day stay in the hospital after making a full recovery. The doctor said that Abrar has returned to work again.
World Organ Donation Day is celebrated every year on 13 August to raise awareness about the importance of organ donation and to dispel common misconceptions about it. The rate of organ donation from deceased bodies in India is very low and is less than one per million people in the country. In contrast, in Western countries, 70-80 percent of organ donation takes place.
