the mosque in mecca saudi arabia
Dubai: Relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia have always been tense. Meanwhile, Iran has said that Saudi Arabia has expelled six journalists of its state television broadcaster from the country. Giving information from Iran, it has been said that the journalists were detained for about a week before being sent back to the country. After this, they were sent back from Saudi Arabia before Haj.
Saudi Arabia responded
Responding to Iran’s statement, Saudi Arabia said that all of them were working in violation of their visa rules. The special thing is that this incident happened a year after the agreement between Riyadh and Tehran was mediated by China. However, there has been tension between the Sunni and Shia countries in Saudi Arabia for decades regarding the holy places. This tension is at its peak during Haj.
what happened after all
Iran’s state TV said it all started a week ago when three crew members were detained while recording recitations from the Quran at the Prophet Mohammed’s mosque. It did not elaborate on their detention, but said they were placed in police custody after “several hours of interrogation.” Two days later, state TV said, Saudi police detained a journalist from Iran’s Arabic-language Al Alam channel and another state TV journalist as they got out of a car to attend a prayer service with Iranian pilgrims. Another radio journalist was detained at a hotel in Medina. All were later released and expelled to Iran without the opportunity to perform the hajj, according to state TV.
Relations are not normal
Let us tell you that the world’s largest Shia Muslim country Iran and Sunni-dominated Saudi Arabia broke their diplomatic relations in 2016. Saudi Arabia hanged prominent Shia cleric Nimr al-Nimr. Iran had strongly opposed the hanging of Saudi’s Shia cleric. During the protest, protesters attacked two Saudi diplomatic missions in Iran, after which Saudi broke its relations with Iran.
Iranians are also banned from performing Hajj
The two countries have broken diplomatic ties before. Saudi Arabia had previously broken ties with Iran from 1988 to 1991 over riots during the 1987 Hajj and Iran’s attacks on shipping in the Persian Gulf. During this period, Iranians were also banned from going to Saudi Arabia to perform Hajj. Even in 2016, when diplomatic relations were ended, Saudi Arabia banned Iranians from performing Hajj. Iranians are going for Hajj in 2024. This year Hajj is starting on June 14 and will continue till June 19. (AP)
