School News: The oldest English medium school in India was opened in Chennai. St. George Anglo-Indian Higher Secondary School was established here during the British rule. It is said that this school was established in the year 1715. This school is about 304 years old. Why was this school established
When the British East India Company entered India, many Britishers came to India. The East India Company opened the first English medium school in Chennai (then Madras) for the children of its employees. This school was named St. George Anglo-Indian Higher Secondary. The education in this school was completely in English medium.
There was no entry for Indians
This school of the East India Company, established in the year 1715, was only for the British. The special thing was that there was no entry for Indians and children of India, only the children of the British could study here. Only they were given admission. Apart from this, admission was also given to the children of those employees of the East India Company who had married an Indian woman and settled down here. Actually, it used to take many months for the British to reach India and the British who came to India alone used to marry Indian women and settle down here. In such a situation, their children were also given admission in this school.

St. George’s Anglo-Indian Higher Secondary School, opened in the year 1715, is in Shenoy Nagar, Chennai. This school is spread over an area of approximately 21 acres. Its building is made of red colored bricks. In this school education is given from nursery to intermediate. Apart from the beautiful building, this school has everything from dormitory to playground. About 1500 students study in this school. Every year a large number of children yearn for admission here.
