Taiwan Earthquake Rescue: Rescue workers are busy searching for missing people on Thursday, a day after the powerful earthquake that struck Taiwan. The earthquake that occurred in Taiwan on Wednesday is considered to be the most powerful earthquake in the last 25 years, due to which many buildings were damaged. There have also been reports of slipping of stones and collapse of mines from many places. Nine people have died and more than a thousand people have been injured due to the earthquake. At least four of the nine killed were inside Taroko National Park. Rescue workers are searching for people using drones and helicopters to take people trapped in parks or other places to safe places.
The epicenter of the earthquake was near Hualien city.
The epicenter of the earthquake was near the eastern coastal city of Hualien. Rescue workers dig around a building in Hualien to prevent it from collapsing. Earlier, Mayor Su Chen-wei had said that 48 residential buildings were damaged by the earthquake. The ground floors of some of these damaged buildings collapsed, causing them to lean dangerously.
Search for missing people continues
The Ministry of Health and Welfare said 64 other workers were working in a rock mine. Six workers from another mine were airlifted out as falling rocks damaged roads, according to the ministry. Efforts are on to save other laborers also. Meanwhile, officials have not been able to contact about 50 people stranded in Taroko National Park, most of whom are hotel employees. At present, rescue workers are searching for the missing people. According to the National Fire Agency, about 150 people are missing. (AP)
