Heart Attack During Mountain Climbing: There is still no relief from heat in most parts of the country. The temperature remains above 45. At the same time, humidity has made life miserable. In such weather, as soon as people get a moment of leisure, they start heading towards the mountains. At this time, there is a rush of tourists in hilly places like Shimla-Manali, Mussoorie, Nainital. But there is also a risk in going to the mountains. As soon as the altitude increases, there is a lack of oxygen. We all know this, but in this condition the risk of heart attack and cardiac arrest also increases. Therefore, Shimla-Manali is fine, but whenever you go there, always be alert about your heart. Some people are more at risk of heart attack in the mountains. That is why we have spoken to HOD and Interventional Cardiologist of Cardiology Department at Fortis Hospital Shalimar Bagh. Dr. Nityanand Tripathi I have talked to him on this issue.
Why is there a heart attack on the mountain?
Dr. Nityanand Tripathi said that most people understand that there is a lack of oxygen at high altitudes, but it is more important to know in which situation heart attack or cardiac arrest occurs. He said that first of all know that people living in the mountains do not have any problem related to oxygen, but for those who live at an altitude less than 1000 feet above sea level, life in the mountains is difficult. The reason for this is that the heart of the people living on the mountains fits itself in that environment, but when the people living below go up, their heart is not able to fit in this environment. Therefore, when there is a lot of lack of oxygen, there is a rapid change in the blood vessels. The blood pressure decreases and oxygen is not able to move beyond the lungs. In this situation, a heart attack or if the case is serious, then cardiac arrest occurs.
The risk of cardiac arrest is higher on mountains
Dr. Nityanand Tripathi says that in fact, at an altitude of 3500 meters, there is not only a lack of oxygen, but the cold also increases and the weather becomes humid. That is, the concentration of oxygen in the air decreases. In such a situation, many types of changes suddenly start happening in the body. When oxygen reaches less, the lungs will start filling with water. In this situation, whatever oxygen comes will not be able to go beyond the lungs. Then suddenly it will feel like an electric shock inside the body. This is the condition in which the cells of the body become incapable of absorbing oxygen. This leads to cardiac arrest. Cardiac arrest is more fatal than heart attack. In this, if the patient is not taken to the doctor within 5-7 minutes, then death is certain. Therefore, whenever you go to the mountain, go with full precaution.
what to do then
Dr. Nityanand Tripathi told that if you are planning to go to the mountain, then start exercising 10 days before that. Walk and run slowly. Reduce the speed as soon as you face difficulty in running. Do not run suddenly. Increase the speed of running gradually. In this way, the capacity will start increasing automatically. If there is already a problem related to breathing, then consult a doctor before this. Always keep measuring BP.
These people should not be tracking
If you have high blood pressure, coronary heart disease, breathing problems or any other heart related problem, do not trek on the mountain at all. If you have lung related problems, do not climb the mountain without consulting a doctor.
If you see these symptoms, go back down immediately.
Dr. Nityanand Tripathi says that if there are heart related complications, it would be better that you do not go to a mountain of high altitude. If you are going, then before going, consult a doctor and keep the necessary medicine with you. While climbing a mountain and you start feeling breathless, stop for a while and then move forward. If you feel breathless after walking a short distance, then do not move forward. While if there is chest pain, vomiting, nausea, dizziness, increased heart beat, then come back.
Rules for climbing high altitudes
If you are going to a high altitude mountain and there is no problem, then first rest in that environment for 24 hours. This will help your body adapt to the environment there. After this, climb the mountain slowly. Be very careful on the first day. Drink a lot of water on the mountain. If there is any problem, keep electrical powder with you. Prepare before any kind of untoward incident. Keep the necessary medicine with you. By doing this, you will be safe even if something untoward happens on the mountain.
