Amritsar . The election of the new president of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) will be voted at the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC), Teja Singh Samundri Hall in Amritsar on Saturday. Since the resignation of Sukhbir Singh Badal on November 16 last year, there were constant discussions and meetings about the new leadership in the party. In this election, 500 delegates from 117 assembly constituencies of the party will exercise their franchise.
A large crowd of Akali Dal workers and leaders is being seen in Teja Singh Samundri Hall since morning. Senior party leader Gurcharan Singh Grewal said, “Today the post of president of Shiromani Akali Dal is being held. It is surprising to see that not only the rebel faction of the party, but also opposition parties like Aam Aadmi Party, Congress and BJP are speaking against Akali Dal. We are neither in power nor in majority, yet why are we feeling threatened?”
Grewal further said, “The election of the Shiromani Committee has always been held in Teja Singh Samundri Hall, which is its administrative block. According to the order of Shri Akal Takht Sahib, now the time has come to close our stove and follow the instructions of Singh Sahib.”
Referring to future plans, he said that in the 2027 assembly elections, the Akali Dal will emerge as a major movement and will make its strong presence in the politics of Punjab.
At the same time, Jagwinder Sohal, leader of the Women’s Wing of Shiromani Akali Dal, spoke of great enthusiasm among the workers. He said, “Today is a historic day. All the workers are participating in this election with great enthusiasm. The Shiromani Akali Dal has a glorious history. It is the maternal party of Punjab, which has made an unprecedented contribution in the development of Punjab at the regional level. Opposition parties also know that the development in the governments of Akali Dal, no other government.”
Taking a dig at the rebel faction, he said, “They are so -called reform movement and tainted. The shadow of the BJP is clearly visible behind it. These people talk about reform in the Akali Dal, but today will show them their real status.”
The election results are expected to come by late evening, after which not only the name of the new president will be revealed, but the new executive of the party will also be formed. According to party sources, the possibility of Sukhbir Singh Badal becoming president is also not being ruled out.
