New Delhi. Amidst the Lok Sabha elections, the election of Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Delhi MCD has reached an interesting turn. Elections for the post of Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Delhi are to be held on 26 April. However, due to the imposition of Model Code of Conduct in the country, the Election Commission has not yet given permission for mayor elections. Despite this, Aam Aadmi Party, BJP and Congress have started preparations. This time too, along with 250 councilors of MCD, all seven Lok Sabha MPs of Delhi, 3 Rajya Sabha MPs and 14 MLAs will cast their votes in the Mayor election. However, some MLAs and MPs may remain absent during voting. In such a situation, this time too there may be a tough contest between BJP and AAP-Congress.
Let us tell you that last year elections for Mayor and Deputy Mayor were held twice. There was tremendous uproar in both the elections. During the elections, the situation had worsened to such an extent that shoes and slippers were thrown inside the House and even chairs were thrown at each other. Let us tell you that in the year 2023, both BJP and Congress used to stand against Aam Aadmi Party, but this time Congress and AAP will be together, due to which AAP’s position in the House will be stronger than before.
The court had to intervene in the last MCD Mayor and Deputy Mayor elections.
Mayor election on 26th April
Despite this, this time BJP has fielded Kishan Lal for the post of Mayor, Ward No. 62 Shakurpur and Neeta Bist for the post of Deputy Mayor, Ward No. 247 Saadatpur. At the same time, Aam Aadmi Party has made Mahesh Khichi for the post of Mayor and Ravindra Bhardwaj for the post of Deputy Mayor of Ward No. 84 Devnagar area. In the last elections, Aam Aadmi Party’s Shaili Oberoi and Aale Mohammad Iqbal had won the post of Deputy Mayor.
Last year also, elections for the post of Mayor and Deputy Mayor were held on 26th April. The number of councilors in Delhi Municipal Corporation is 250, out of which 134 councilors of Aam Aadmi Party and 104 councilors of BJP have won. 9 councilors of Congress have also won the elections. This time Congress and Aam Aadmi Party are together, hence their number becomes 143. Along with this, 3 Rajya Sabha MPs and 14 MLAs of Aam Aadmi Party will also cast their votes.

At the same time, this time also BJP does not want to give walk over to Aam Aadmi Party in the mayor elections. Therefore, BJP is trying to ensure that this time too there is a tough contest for the post of Mayor. However, BJP’s numbers are coming in the way. In such a situation, this will be possible only if along with the MPs, some MLAs also remain absent from voting. But, it seems difficult for this to happen. Meanwhile, Assembly Speaker Ramniwas Goyal has nominated 14 MLAs for the MCD elections, who will participate in the voting process.
