Prague: Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has threatened to stop the supply of diesel to Ukraine. PM Fico says that if the transportation of Russian oil to Slovakia via Ukraine is not resumed soon, the country’s Slovnaft refinery will stop supplying diesel to Ukraine. Ukraine recently stopped the transportation of oil from the Russian company Lukoil to Slovakia and Hungary via the Druzhba pipeline. It put the company on its sanctions list in June. Slovakia’s Finance Ministry said earlier this month that deliveries of oil from Lukoil to Slovakia via Ukraine had already stopped.

What did PM Fico say?

In a video message, Prime Minister Fico said that further enforcement of sanctions imposed by Ukraine on Lukoil would only harm Ukraine, Slovakia and Hungary, reports Xinhua news agency. “If Russian oil supplies through Ukraine are not resumed soon, the Slovakian company Slovnaft (which covers a tenth of Ukrainian consumption) will stop supplying diesel to Ukraine,” he said.

Slovak Prime Minister Fico also spoke to Ukrainian Prime Minister Denis Shmyhal on phone on Friday and suggested a technical solution to resume oil supplies. Fico said in a video message on Monday, “On behalf of Slovakia, I reiterate that we are ready. I welcome reports that confirm that the relevant commercial companies are already considering implementing this technical solution in the shortest possible time.” (IANS)
