Thiruvananthapuram. Smriti Irani, who defeated Rahul Gandhi in Amethi, is all set to land next week in Wayanad, where the Congress leader won the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. According to sources, Union Women and Child Development Minister Irani is coming up with a mission to take on Rahul Gandhi, especially in Wayanad district, which has the largest population of tribals and despite the Centre’s several schemes for their upliftment. The condition remains as it is.
According to the 2011 census, Kerala has a Scheduled Tribe population of 4,84,839 (1.5% of the total population) and Wayanad district has the highest number of 1,51,443 tribals.
Incidentally, actor-politician Suresh Gopi was a nominated member of the Upper House from this constituency, whose term ended this month. In his last few speeches in Parliament, he had raised the issue of how centrally sponsored schemes are being run for the upliftment of the poor and downtrodden. He had said that due attention is not being given to the SC/ST communities in Kerala, which is encouraging Smriti Irani to visit Wayanad.
Irani is likely to roam in tribal colonies and stay in Wayanad for a day or two. She will use most of her time to know people’s opinion about Rahul Gandhi’s absence from her constituency.
