Shreyas Iyer and Pat Cummins with the IPL 2024 trophy
In the 17th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), the final match to be played on May 26 at the Chepauk Stadium in Chennai will see a clash between Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad. When Sunrisers Hyderabad made Pat Cummins a part of their team for Rs 20 crore 50 lakh in the player auction for this season of IPL, everyone was surprised at this decision of the franchise. The reason behind this was Cummins’ record as a player in IPL was not very good, but Hyderabad gave him the responsibility of captaincy, after which Cummins has now proved everyone wrong and led the team to the final. With this, Cummins has also become a part of a special list in IPL history.
Cummins is the 9th player to take the team to the finals in his debut season as a captain
In the history of IPL, there have been very few seasons in the 17 seasons when a team has played the season under the leadership of a new captain and has managed to reach the finals. Cummins has now become a part of this special list. Before Cummins, only 8 players were able to do this in their debut season as captain. Apart from Shane Warne and MS Dhoni, the names of Anil Kumble, Daniel Vettori, Rohit Sharma and George Bailey are also included in this list in the first IPL season played in 2008. However, only three of these captains are such who have succeeded in winning the title for their team while playing in the debut season of their captaincy in IPL.
