So far, over 1,000 people, including Elon Musk and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, have signed an open letter on San Francisco startup OpenAI’s recent release of GPT-4. GPT-4 is a more advanced version of the widely used AI chatbot ChatGPT. Now giant companies like Microsoft and Google have also joined the race to develop similar software.
‘AI is a threat to humanity’
The company has claimed that its new model is much more powerful than the previous one. “AI systems with human-rivaling intelligence could pose profound risks to society and humanity,” said the open letter titled ‘Pause Giant AI Experiments’. “Powerful AI systems should be developed only when we are convinced that their impact will be positive and that their risks are manageable,” the letter says.

Elon Musk was the investor of OpenAI
Musk was an early investor in OpenAI and has been a member of its board for many years. His car firm Tesla has developed AI systems to power its self-driving technology. The Future of Life Institute, funded by Musk, has hosted this letter. It has been signed on by prominent critics as well as OpenAI’s competitors such as Imad Mostak, head of Stability AI.
