Union Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said on Sunday that detailed discussions are underway on various aspects and suggestions on the draft Data Protection Act. He said that the government is hopeful that the complex issues will be resolved soon and it will also get the approval of Parliament in the monsoon session.
He said there are no plans to scrap the existing draft of the Data Protection Act and complex issues are expected to be resolved on the basis of suggestions received from relevant parties. The issue is also being discussed at the Parliamentary Committee level. Apart from making provisions to protect the personal data of citizens in the Data Protection Bill, it is also proposed to set up a Data Protection Authority.
It provides that no company can use personal information related to it without the consent of the person. The Bill also asked the government to give certain concessions to its investigative agencies from the provisions of the Act. Opposing this, the members of the opposition parties also expressed their dissent.
