Mogadishu: Somalia’s sea turned blood red when people gathered on a beach suddenly came under gunfire. Al-Shabab suicide bombers and gunmen attacked a busy beach in the Somali capital Mogadishu, killing 32 people and wounding many more, police said on Saturday, in one of the deadliest attacks in months.

Al-Qaeda-linked jihadists have been waging an insurgency against the internationally backed federal government for more than 17 years and have previously targeted the Lido beach area, popular with business people and officials. Unverified videos shared online shortly after the attack showed people scattering in the street, with several clips showing bloodied bodies lying on the beach.

The security forces surrounded

It is being told that bombs and firing took place at a hotel near the beach in the capital Mogadishu. After getting the information, the security forces surrounded the spot. Officials and eyewitnesses gave this information. The country’s official ‘Somali National News Agency’ said that the security forces “killed the attackers.” Al-Qaeda’s East Africa affiliate Al-Shabab took the responsibility for this attack through its radio and said that its fighters attacked the hotel. Lido beach, a popular area of Mogadishu, was very busy on Friday night, as Somalis come here to roam on weekends.

Several eyewitnesses saw the attackers

An eyewitness, Mohammed Moalim, said over the phone that he saw an attacker wearing a jacket loaded with explosives, and a short time later he blew himself up near the hotel. Moalim said that some of his colleagues who were with him in the hotel were also killed and others were injured. Another eyewitness, Abdisalam Adam, told the Associated Press that he saw many people lying unconscious on the ground and also helped take some injured people to the hospital. Lido beach has been targeted earlier also by terrorists linked to Al-Shabab. Nine people were killed in the attack last year. So far 32 people have been confirmed dead in this attack. (Language)
