Prime Minister Narendra Modi says that Congress has lost the trust of the people, they are not getting candidates, that is why the royal family of Congress will not vote for its own party in Delhi for the first time. In fact, there is no Congress candidate in the New Delhi Lok Sabha seat where big Congress leaders like Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra are voters. That’s why Prime Minister Modi said that the royal family of Congress will not vote for its own party in Delhi. This time there is a direct contest between Aam Aadmi Party and BJP on New Delhi Lok Sabha seat.
AAP has not won the New Delhi seat till date
This is the first time after independence that no candidate from the Congress party is in the fray. Congress is out of competition here. Many leaders of Congress also believe that Aam Aadmi Party has not won the New Delhi Lok Sabha seat till date, whereas Congress has won the New Delhi Lok Sabha elections 7 times. Despite this, Congress had to leave this seat. Due to the seat agreement between Congress and Aam Aadmi Party in Delhi, Congress is not in the contest here. This is the same seat where voters include Congress Parliamentary Party President Sonia Gandhi, MP Rahul Gandhi and her sister Priyanka Vadra.
Why were Congress leaders against the alliance?
Many senior Congress and local leaders have been expressing their objections regarding this agreement in hushed tones. In the initial phase, most of the leaders of Delhi Congress were completely against this alliance. A big reason for this is that before the alliance between Congress and AAP, Aam Aadmi Party MLA Jarnail Singh and other members had proposed in the Delhi Assembly to withdraw the Bharat Ratna from Rajiv Gandhi. Not only was this proposal tabled in the Assembly, but most of the members of the Aam Aadmi Party, including the Assembly Speaker, also supported this proposal.
Kejriwal has demanded Sonia’s arrest
Not only this, Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal himself has demanded the arrest of Sonia Gandhi. At many places, relations between AAP and Congress leaders are still not comfortable. Congress and AAP are still against each other in Punjab and are contesting elections separately.
Bansuri Swaraj Vs Somnath Bharti
At the same time, BJP has so far won the New Delhi Lok Sabha seat 11 times. This time BJP has made Bansuri Swaraj, daughter of former Union Minister Sushma Swaraj, as its candidate. Somnath Bharti is in the fray from Aam Aadmi Party. Somnath Bharti is an MLA from the Aam Aadmi Party and has also been a minister in the Delhi government.
BJP candidate Bansuri Swaraj has graduated in English Literature from Warwick University. He studied law from BPP Law School, London and a Masters from St Catharine’s College, Oxford University. If we talk about AAP’s Somnath Bharti, he is also a lawyer by profession. He has been the Law Minister in the Kejriwal government of Delhi. Presently he is the Vice Chairman of Delhi Jal Board. Somnath Bharti did MSc from IIT Delhi in 1997. After this, he did law from Delhi University and also practiced in Delhi High Court and Supreme Court. (With IANS inputs)
