new Delhi. Six days after the defeat of the Congress in five assembly elections, Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday appointed five senior leaders to assess the post-poll situation in these states. The leaders will suggest organizational changes after holding talks with MLAs, candidates and important leaders.
Rajya Sabha MPs Rajni Patil Goa, Jairam Ramesh Manipur, Ajay Maken Punjab, Jitendra Singh Uttar Pradesh and Avinash Pandey will assess the situation in Uttarakhand.
The initiative comes just a day after the Congress president asked the state unit chiefs of these states to resign.
The move was taken when disgruntled Congress leaders, known as the ‘G23 group’, are meeting at the residence of senior party leader Ghulam Nabi Azad to chalk out their strategy after the party’s humiliating defeat.
Sonia Gandhi had offered to step back from the leadership herself along with Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Sunday at a meeting of the Congress Working Committee – the party’s highest decision-making body – but their offer was rejected by CWC members.
