South Korea factory fire
Seoul: The search for casualties continued on Tuesday after a fire broke out at a factory near South Korea’s capital Seoul, killing 22 people, most of them Chinese migrant workers. More than 100 people were working at the factory when the fire broke out on Monday morning in Hwaseong city, south of Seoul. Fire officials said footage from security cameras showed smoke spreading to the second floor immediately after the fire broke out in an area where lithium batteries were stored.
Chinese ambassador expressed condolences
Firefighters recovered 21 bodies one after another from the factory. Of them, 18 were Chinese nationals, two were South Korean nationals and one was a Laotian national. The nationality of one of the deceased is being ascertained. Chinese Ambassador Jing Haiming visited the factory on Monday night and expressed condolences over the death of the workers. According to fire officials, the police are collecting DNA samples of the deceased and their relatives. One worker of the factory is missing but his mobile signal was found in the building on Monday afternoon. Eight people were injured in the accident, two of whom are in critical condition.

President of South Korea visited the factory
South Korean President Yun Suk-yeol also visited the factory on Monday. He expressed condolences over the deaths of the workers and ordered officials to take measures to effectively deal with battery-related fires. Local fire official Kim Jin-young said in a televised briefing that more than 50 fire officials with the help of sniffer dogs were searching for casualties on Tuesday. He said some remains have been found but it was not immediately known whether they were the remains of the missing person. Kim Jin-young said a different team of fire officials, police officials and other experts would investigate what actually started the fire. (AP)
