Colombo: Sri Lankan security forces suspect that a 46-year-old man is the mastermind of four Sri Lankan nationals who were arrested at India’s Ahmedabad airport last week for their alleged links with the banned Islamic State (ISIS), according to a media report. According to a report by NewsFirst news portal, Sri Lankan police said that the suspect Usmand Gerrad is a resident of Dematagoda and often changes his appearance.
Information sharing begins
The news portal said on Tuesday that Gerrad is believed to be helping Sri Lankan suspects to travel to India. Sri Lankan police recently announced a reward of Rs 20 lakh for credible information on the whereabouts of the suspect. Information sharing has begun between Sri Lanka and India on Sri Lankans arrested in India. The collaborative effort involves both the Sri Lanka Army Intelligence Division and the Police Terrorist Investigation Division, the news portal said on Tuesday.
Four Sri Lankans arrested
The Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad arrested four Sri Lankans allegedly linked to ISIS at Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Airport on May 19. The four had come to Chennai from Colombo on May 19 by an IndiGo flight.
Identification of terrorists
The news portal said that among the arrested persons, Mohammed Nusrat is a businessman and deals in import of telecommunication equipment and electrical equipment from countries like Singapore, Malaysia and Dubai. Meanwhile, 27-year-old Mohammed Nafran is the son of notorious underworld criminal Niyas Naufar alias ‘Potta Naufar’ from his first wife. ‘Potta Naufar’ was sentenced to death for the murder of High Court judge Sharath Ambepitiya. The other two Sri Lankans are 35-year-old Mohammed Faris, a resident of Colombo, and 43-year-old Mohammed Rashidin, also a resident of Colombo. The Terrorist Investigation Division had arrested Faris’s close associate Hameed Aamir on May 21. Faris left for Chennai on May 19. (Language)
