Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has thrown out two ministers who openly criticized his younger brother, Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa, for the country’s current economic crisis. Both had fiercely accused Basil’s style of working.

Rajapaksa used Article 47(2) of the Constitution to remove Energy Minister Uday Gammanapila and Industries Minister Vimal Veeravanse from office. Both are members of the ruling coalition SLPP.
During a rally held on Wednesday along with nine other smaller parties, both of them made fierce allegations, blaming Basil Rajapaksa for the current economic crisis, oil and power crisis. He had said that Basil’s style of functioning is that the country’s central bank governor Ajith Cabral is not even able to meet him.
Gemini Lokuge, who replaced Gammanapila as energy minister, said it was unfair for both of them to criticize Basil as members of the cabinet. Industries SB Dissanayake has been appointed industries minister in place of Veeravanse. There is an acute shortage of essentials in Sri Lanka at this time. There are miles long queues at petrol pumps here. There is a power cut for seven hours.
