The Election Commission has issued an advisory to the political parties contesting the Lok Sabha elections. In its advisory issued, the Commission has given strict instructions to stop asking voters to register themselves for post-election benefit schemes in the name of surveys. The Commission believes that such surveys influence voting. The Election Commission has said that such activities are taken seriously as it constitutes a corrupt practice under election law. Parties and candidates are asking for details of voters under the guise of survey. This should be stopped immediately.
The Commission said that through this, voters are invited for registration, which is a kind of temptation. In such a case, the Election Commission has directed all the District Election Officers to take appropriate action. The Election Commission has issued an advisory to all national and state political parties to immediately stop and desist from any activity that registers people for beneficiary-oriented schemes after the elections through any advertisement, survey or mobile application. In the advisory issued by the Election Commission, the activities which have been instructed to be stopped immediately include:
- Asking voters to register themselves for benefits through advertisements in newspapers, by giving a missed call on a mobile or by calling a telephone number.
- Asking for details of individual benefit seekers like name, age, address, mobile number, booth number, constituency name and number etc. through pamphlets for guarantee cards.
- Distribution of forms asking for voters’ information like name, ration card number, address, phone number, booth number, bank account number.
- Use of web platform or web/mobile application for canvassing or dissemination by political parties/candidates seeking details of voters such as name, address, phone number, booth number, constituency name and number etc.
- Collecting information from people about the beneficial schemes being availed by them along with name, husband/father’s name, contact number, address etc.
