Indian boxers got a tough draw at the Strandja Memorial here but Nikhat Zareen will start her campaign in the tournament straight away from the quarter-finals. Sumit and Anjali Tusheer will face tough rivals in their first round matches. Zareen, who won a gold medal in the 2019 tournament, got a bye in the first round of the 52kg category.

Akash gets first round bye
Among men, Akash Kumar got a first round bye in the 67kg category, while Sumit (75kg) will open his campaign against World Championships silver medalist Zhambulat Bizamov of Russia on Sunday. Varinder Singh (60kg) will open the Indian challenge against Artur Subhkhankulov of Russia on Sunday. Sumit, Lakshya Chahar (86kg) and Narinder Berwal (+92kg) will also enter the ring on the first day.
Won two medals last time
This oldest international boxing tournament in Europe, held for the first time in the year 1950, will run till 27 February. The tournament also featured boxers from Kazakhstan, Italy, Russia and France. This is the first tournament for Indian boxers this year. Last season, India had won two medals in the form of Deepak Kumar’s silver and Naveen Bura’s bronze.
The 17-member Indian team comprises seven men and 10 women boxers. More than 450 boxers from 36 countries are participating in this tournament. It is the first Golden Belt Series tournament and also the test competition of the International Boxing Federation’s World Boxing Tour format.
