New Delhi. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Friday said it has found negligence on the part of authorities in a stray dog attack incident that took place on the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) campus last year. In which a 65 year old man had died. The National Human Rights Commission said in a statement that it has recommended a relief amount of Rs 7.5 lakh to the family of the victim. It is noteworthy that Safdar Ali Khan was mauled to death by a pack of stray dogs in a park inside the AMU campus during his morning walk in April last year. The incident was widely reported and a video of it even went viral on social media.
The National Human Rights Commission has found “negligence on the part of officials” in last year’s stray dog attack on the AMU campus in Uttar Pradesh, which led to the death of a person, the commission said in a statement. NHRC has asked the UP government through its Chief Secretary to pay Rs 7.5 lakh to Khan’s family. The statement said that report of proof of payment has also been sought within eight weeks. The Commission had registered a suo motu case on the basis of a media report dated April 17, 2023 about the incident. In this matter, notices were issued to the Chief Secretary of Uttar Pradesh Government, Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University and Commissioner of Aligarh Municipal Corporation, demanding a detailed report.
The National Human Rights Commission statement said that the state government was expected to inform whether any relief has been given to the relatives of the deceased or not. Based on the material obtained from the replies received from the concerned officers, the Commission had issued a show cause notice to the Chief Secretary as to why a sum of Rs 7.5 lakh should not be recommended as relief to the family of the victim. However, the concerned authorities forwarded a letter from the Registrar of AMU, stating that the Commission’s notice does not contain any instructions which the university should follow.
