Bangladesh Police
Dhaka: Police officers in Bangladesh have agreed to call off their strike after the interim government assured them of meeting most of their demands, according to media reports. The Bangladesh Police Subordinate Employees’ Association (BPSEA) had called off the strike on August 6 after violent clashes broke out across the country between police and students during mass demonstrations against the Sheikh Hasina government over the controversial job reservation system. The violence led to the fall of Hasina’s Awami League-led government and she had to leave the country and go to India. After the fall of the government, many policemen did not return to work due to fear and some policemen went to their police stations in plain clothes.
Will the demands be fulfilled?
The Dhaka Tribune newspaper reported that representatives of the striking police personnel held a meeting with Brigadier General (Retired) M Sakhawat Hossain, the interim government’s Home Affairs Advisor, on Sunday and then announced the withdrawal of the strike. He said the police have been assured that most of their 11-point demands will be accepted. The bdnews24.com news portal reported that based on the meeting, it has been decided that the protesting non-cadre policemen will return to work from Monday. The report quoted Asaduzzaman Jewel, a member of an inquiry committee formed by the Inspector General of Police, as saying, “After the meeting with the Home Affairs Advisor, we have received assurances and we will wear our uniforms and resume work from Monday.”
‘The culprit will not be spared’
Interim Home Affairs Advisor Sakhawat said that those who ordered the use of excessive force had links with top leaders and no culprit would be spared. He said that the matter would be investigated. The Daily Star newspaper quoted him as saying, “I personally believe that there should be a police commission. The police will work under the commission and not under any political party. Political parties misuse the police.” He said, “The police uniform and logo will be changed as soon as possible. They are very hurt. They (police) do not want to go out with this uniform.” The protesting police officers have demanded punishment for those responsible for the attack on police establishments. They have also put forward many demands including compensation for the families of the deceased officers and transparency in police recruitment.
How many policemen lost their lives?
Newly appointed Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mohammad Mainul Islam had said that at least 42 members of the police force were killed and hundreds injured in the recent clashes. He said that more than 500 policemen were injured and were treated in hospital, more than 24 policemen are still undergoing treatment.
