Washington: Hamas terrorist attack and then Israel’s counterattack. Now the effects of this war are widely visible in America. Following the arrest of protesters at Columbia University this month over the Israel-Hamas war, students have also begun demonstrations on several other college campuses. Students are demanding universities divest from companies that are supporting Israel’s military efforts in Gaza. New York Police arrested protesters at Columbia University on April 18, after which the number of protesters arrested across the country has reached 1,000.
Outsiders joined the protest
Protests on many college campuses have been organized by student groups. Some universities said that outsiders have also joined the students’ protest and created trouble. These demonstrations have spread to Canada and Europe. French police have evacuated several students from the Sorbonne University after pro-Palestinian protesters took over its main courtyard. The authorities are trying to end the protests as the academic year is over but students are protesting in large numbers in many renowned universities. Columbia University spokesman Ben Chang said the university is taking action to suspend student protesters who violate warnings to evacuate campus after the deadline.
Indian student arrested
Meanwhile, let us also tell here that recently, Achintya Sivalingam, an Indian-origin student studying at America’s prestigious Princeton University, was arrested during a pro-Palestine protest in the college campus. Sivalingam was arrested for protesting and erecting a tent on the campus. Another student, Hassan Saeed, was also arrested along with Achintya Sivalingam.
Opposition is increasing
It is noteworthy that thousands of students in America are protesting against the deaths in Gaza due to Israeli military operation. The protests, which started at Columbia University in New York, have now reached colleges across the country. Protesters are demanding their universities divest from companies profiting from the Gaza war and advocating for an immediate ceasefire. (AP)
