Success Story: The child whose parents were afraid of not being able to walk properly in his childhood, grew up and not only went to America and Chicago, but also became a professor in a big university there. Today, that country is not only making India proud in the world, but is also helping many Indian youth like itself to study and study abroad. This is the story of Arup Verma, a resident of Prayagraj. Arup’s parents were originally from Prayagraj, but when his father got a job as a Hindi teacher in a private school in Kolkata, the whole family became residents of Kolkata.

Arup tells that when he was born, his mother was afraid whether he would be able to walk properly or not, because it took him a long time to walk in childhood. Arup Verma says that his childhood was spent in a lot of struggles. His entire family lived in one room, which did not have toilet facilities and had to share the common bathroom with the neighbours. Arup says that his mother wanted him to study, so since childhood, she started sending him to school on a bicycle with his elder brother.

He studied up to higher secondary in the same school where Arup’s father taught. Arup Verma says that later his father’s two school buses also started running, then he started helping in that too. For this, he had to get up at 5 in the morning and return to school by 9 o’clock. Even while returning from school, work had to be done on the entire bus route. In this way, he was taught to respect work since childhood.
Where did you pursue further studies?
Arup Verma obtained B.Sc Honors degree from Kolkata in the year 1982. After this, he went to Xavier School of Management Jamshedpur, Jharkhand for further studies in management. After completing the course in 1984, Arup got a job in Ranbaxy Company in Delhi. In 1985, he also stayed at the company’s plant in Dewas, Madhya Pradesh.

Arup Verma says that after Ranbaxy, he worked in Computers Limited from 1987 to 1990, but he did not intend to stop here. Had to go abroad for further studies. During this time, he took admission in PhD at Rutgers University of America. After completing his PhD from here, in 1996, he became an assistant professor at Loyola University Chicago. Arup says that during his 28 years of service, he was also a director and department head. Till now he has taught management in almost 80 countries. He has also given lectures in India’s IIM Lucknow, XLRI Jamshedpur, Goa Institute of Management and many other such institutes. Besides, they also keep helping Indian children on how to study abroad and how to get scholarships. Not only this, many countries of the world including India keep calling Arup for management classes, but Arup says that he is more interested in encouraging Indian children.
