Sumit Nagal
India’s top singles player Sumit Nagal has returned to the Davis Cup team for the World Group I match against Sweden. This match is scheduled to be held in Stockholm on 14-15 September. However, Yuki Bhambri has decided to stay out of this important match, which will see some changes in the team. Sumit Nagal, who has been in form recently, will lead the team. Earlier, Nagal could not play in the historic match against Pakistan. At the same time, Sasikumar Mukund was also unable to participate in that match in Islamabad, and he was suspended for two matches for refusing to play against Pakistan earlier this year. Due to this, Mukund did not get a place in the team this time too.
These players got a chance
Apart from Sumit Nagal, the Davis Cup team also includes Ramkumar Ramanathan, N Sriram Balaji, Niki Poonacha and former national champion Siddharth Vishwakarma. Aryan Shah has been selected as a reserve player. Yuki Bhambri, who is India’s number one doubles player after Rohan Bopanna’s retirement, has decided to stay out of the tie. Selection committee chairman Nandan Bal said that Yuki has not given any reason for his unavailability. However, according to AITA (All India Tennis Association) sources, Yuki was not happy that he was not selected for the Paris Olympics. It was also reported that Rohan Bopanna had decided to play with Balaji, and the decision was entirely his.
Rohit Rajpal will be the captain
Team captain Rohit Rajpal will also return, who could not play in the match against Pakistan due to personal reasons. AITA also clarified that they will try different combinations and see which combination the team can perform better with. After Zeeshan Ali resigned from the post of Davis Cup coach, former national champion Ashutosh Singh has been appointed as the new coach of the national team. AITA had two options in the form of Delhi player Ashutosh Singh and M Balachandran, but keeping in mind the views of the players, Ashutosh Singh was chosen as the coach.
