Before the hearing in the Supreme Court, two doctors’ organizations, Federation of Resident Doctors Association i.e. FORDA and Federation of Association of Medical Consultants of India i.e. FAMCI, have also filed petitions. In the petition filed in the Supreme Court, FORDA has described health workers as playing an important role in the society. The organization has said that they work in challenging conditions to save people’s lives. FORDA has told the Supreme Court that the safety of health workers is paramount. The organization has appealed to the court to make comprehensive safety protocols mandatory in RG Kar Medical College and other similar medical institutions.
At the same time, FAMCI has said in the petition filed in the Supreme Court that due to the absence of a central law, medical personnel are not protected in hospitals. The organization has appealed that the court should give guidelines to ensure the safety of health workers and to remove the shortcomings in the related laws made at the state level. Apart from this, FAMCI has also appealed that resident doctors in private and government medical colleges and doctors in other government hospitals should be declared public servants. An appeal has also been made to set up police posts in government hospitals. Meanwhile, doctors across the country are continuing their protest in the case of rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College. They demand that the CBI arrest the culprits and the court should give them maximum punishment. The protesting doctors and health workers also want assurance from the government that such arrangements will be made so that such an incident does not happen again in the future.
