Ordering from Swiggy and Zomato has become even more expensive from January 1. Now ordering online on both the applications will attract more charges. A day before that, on New Year’s Eve, people fiercely ordered online. Swiggy saw a record-breaking 2 million orders on New Year’s Eve, while Zomato too got over 2 million orders.December 31 was the field day of the Swiggy-Zomato app. Most of the people did not attend the New Year’s Eve party due to Omicron‘s fear and this led to an increase in the number of orders on Swiggy and Zomato. Swiggy got over 9000 orders per minute and the number of orders on Zomato exceeded 8000 per minute. Swiggy shared on Twitter that the food-delivery app has crossed two million orders on New Year’s Eve. Like last year, this year also Swiggy’s record has been broken, last year only 5500 orders per minute were received, but this year the total number of orders has reached 9000 per minute. Swiggy also revealed that Biryani is the most ordered food.
Swiggy wrote on Twitter, ‘Many people in India are fond of Biryani. On the eve of 1st December 1229 biryanis were delivered in one minute. Apart from biryani, Indians also ordered butter naan, masala dosa, paneer butter masala and chicken fried rice in large quantities. Swiggy also shared that people ordered record snack items for the New Year celebrations. The food-delivery app includes 15,458 cartons of eggs, 35,177 bags of tomatoes, 27,574 bags of onions and 7,822 packets of bread.
Zomato also crossed over 2 million orders on New Year’s Eve. CEO Deependra Goyal revealed that the increase in the number of orders has also affected the success rate of UPI. Not only did people order food, Swiggy and Zomato’s grocery platforms Instamart and Let’s Blink Eat also received thousands of orders. From January 1, Swiggy and Zomato will be expensive food-delivery apps, will have to pay 5 percent Goods and Services Tax on their restaurant service as per the government order.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that food-delivery platforms such as Swiggy and Zomato should pay GST on behalf of their partner restaurants, including Cloud Kitchen and Central Kitchen, whose services are available through their application. Swiggy and Zomato accepted it and now it will be implemented from the first day of 2022.
