Kabul: The Taliban have deliberately deprived 1.4 million girls in Afghanistan from going to school through restrictions. A United Nations agency gave this information on Thursday. Afghanistan is the only country in the world where women are banned from pursuing secondary and higher secondary education. The Taliban, which came to power in 2021, has banned girls from studying beyond the sixth grade as it says it is not in accordance with the interpretation of Sharia or Islamic law. UNESCO said that the Taliban have deliberately deprived at least 1.4 million girls of secondary education since coming to power.

what do the statistics say

According to UNESCO, this is an increase of 3,00,000 since the last census in April 2023. UNESCO said, “If we add those girls who were not going to school before the ban came into force, now about 2.5 million girls in the country are deprived of their right to education. According to this, 80 percent of girls in Afghanistan are away from education.” There was no immediate comment from the Taliban. A significant blow to Afghanistan’s economy is the Taliban’s ban on female education and most employment, leaving half of Afghanistan’s population vulnerable to spending and tax payments.

3 years of Taliban rule completed

Meanwhile, it should also be noted here that it has been three years since the Taliban rule in Afghanistan. In these three years, it has imposed its interpretation of Islamic law and tried to strengthen its claim of legitimate government. Despite having no national recognition as the official ruler of the country, the Taliban have held high-level meetings with major regional powers like China and Russia. They have also participated in talks proposed by the United Nations in which women of Afghanistan, people associated with civil society were not given the opportunity to participate. (AP)
