The condition of women in Afghanistan is deplorable. The condition of women was already not very good in Afghanistan, but ever since the Taliban took over the reins of governance, the condition of women has gone from bad to worse. The Taliban regime has imposed similar restrictions on women. Now in this sequence, Supreme Leader of Taliban Mullah Hibatullah Akhundzada has issued a new decree against women. According to the decree, any woman found guilty of having sexual relations with a man other than her husband will be stoned to death.
‘Will bring back Sharia in Afghanistan’
An audio message of Mullah Hibatullah Akhundzada has also surfaced. In this audio message, Akhundzada challenged the democracy of Western countries and ordered strict implementation of Islamic law Sharia. The Taliban leader said, ‘You say it is a violation of women’s rights when we stone them to death, but soon this punishment will be implemented for adultery. The guilty women will be publicly whipped and stoned. Akhundzada said that do women want the rights that western countries are talking about? All such rights are against Sharia and the opinion of the clerics. The same clerics who overthrew Western democracy. We fought against the Westerners for 20 years and if necessary, we will continue to fight for the next 20 years. The Taliban leader also said that our work was not over when we recaptured Kabul. We are not going to sit quietly and drink tea. We will bring back Sharia in Afghanistan.
Taliban had said this
It is also worth noting that, when Taliban took power in Afghanistan, it had assured that it would not violate women’s rights. Despite this, women’s rights are being violated in Afghanistan. Girls’ school education has been banned. Women were removed from most of the jobs or a man from their family was hired in their place. Many things like women going to beauty parlors and playing sports have also been banned in Afghanistan.
UN report came out
Recently a United Nations report came out regarding the situation of women in Afghanistan. In this report, concern was expressed over the arbitrary detention of women and girls. The report claimed that women imprisoned in prisons were physically abused during the Taliban rule. In the report, the Taliban regime demanded that it immediately lift the restrictions imposed on women’s dress and stop the detention of girls.
Sharia law
After capturing Afghanistan, Taliban had said that Sharia law would be implemented in the country. Sharia is like a legal system for people who believe in Islam. This is applicable in many Islamic countries. However, it is not fully implemented in most Islamic countries including Pakistan. It contains laws on many big issues ranging from everyday life. Sharia also includes laws related to family, finance and business. There are strict rules for punishment for crime.
