new Delhi. External Affairs Minister of India S. Jaishankar said in Sri Lanka on Tuesday that the Russo-Ukraine war has increased international unrest and also underlined that maintaining international peace and security can no longer be taken lightly.
Speaking during the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) Ministerial Meeting, Jaishankar said that the international system is passing through a very challenging phase. The challenges of covid are not over yet. But recent developments in Ukraine have exacerbated international unrest. We have all underlined that the maintenance of international peace and security and even stability can no longer be taken lightly.
Jaishankar is on a tour of Sri Lanka from March 28 to March 30.
He said that BIMSTEC member countries should acknowledge that we are facing adversity from the global economy and in some cases from our domestic economies.
BIMSTEC is a regional organization established on 6 June 1997 with the signing of the Bangkok Declaration. The member countries of BIMSTEC are Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand.
Jaishankar further said that in challenging circumstances, member countries should enhance domestic capabilities and there is also a need to widen and deepen cooperation under BIMSTEC. He said that we need to work together in many more areas. We need more effective and faster cooperation. We need to accelerate and build on what we have achieved in the last 25 years.
