Summary
While the DMK’s victory seemed to support the nine-month rule of MK Stalin, the AIADMK’s influence, which ruled for decades, seemed to dwindle.
In Tamil Nadu’s urban civic polls, the ruling DMK showed strength and won the maximum number of seats. At the same time, the political ground of the main opposition party AIADMK was seen slipping like in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and the last assembly elections. The BJP strengthened its position by winning 300 seats while feeding lotus in the South.
MK Stalin’s ruling party secured over 60 per cent votes in the elections, pushing AIADMK to the second position. DMK won 952 seats in corporation wards, 2360 in municipalities and 4389 in urban panchayats.
These include former chief ministers Palanisamy and O. Panneerselvam’s home areas are also included. All elected councilors will be sworn in on March 2 and the election of the mayor and deputy mayor will be held on March 4.
While the DMK’s victory seemed to support the nine-month rule of MK Stalin, the AIADMK’s influence, which ruled for decades, seemed to dwindle.
Enthused by the election results, Chief Minister MK Stalin said, “People have reposed faith in the government, people have rejected the claims of the opposition that we made lucrative promises in the assembly elections, but did not start the work.” Work has already started on 70 per cent of the promises.
