Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman attacks Congress over Tamil Nadu poisonous liquor tragedy
The number of people who lost their lives due to consumption of poisonous liquor in Kallakurichi district of Tamil Nadu has increased to 56. A big information has come to light in the Kallakurichi poisonous liquor tragedy case. The district administration says that the bodies buried without postmortem will be exhumed to confirm illegal liquor consumption, so that compensation can be given to the families. Meanwhile, a statement of Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has also come to light in this matter.
“The investigation of the case should be handed over to the CBI”
The Union Finance Minister said, “More than 200 people are still in critical condition in the hospital. 56 people have died and most of them are from the Scheduled Castes. I condemn this incident. I am surprised that the Congress did not speak a word against it. In a state where licensed liquor is available at government-run shops called ‘TASMAC’, despite this, chemical-laced illicit liquor is served in the middle of Kallakurichi town. Where is Congress party president Mallikarjun Kharge? Where is Rahul Gandhi? He fights elections only because he is confident that he will win. When Dalits are dying from poisonous liquor, there has not been a single statement from Rahul Gandhi. I demand that the entire matter be handed over to the CBI for investigation.”
BJP leaders protest
At the same time, a large number of BJP workers, including senior BJP leader H Raja, were detained by the police when they tried to protest against the ruling DMK over the Kallakurichi poisonous liquor tragedy on Saturday. The purpose of this statewide protest by the BJP was to condemn the DMK government for allegedly failing to stop the smuggling of illicit liquor. Several BJP members led by Raja, who went to protest in Madurai, were detained by the police. They were later released.
