Chennai. Poor infrastructure and lack of health facilities at Isalatta near Anamalai Tiger Reserve (ATR) in Tamil Nadu forced a tribal family to carry a sick woman in a cloth cradle to a general hospital in the main township.
According to tribal leader Madhusudanan, the community in Islatt had to take M. Mayammal (54) to the government hospital at Jallipatti via ATR in a cloth cradle.
While the tribal settlement is on top of a hill in ATR, the hospital at Jallipatti is 5 km below the foothills.
Madhusudanan, who accompanied Mayammal’s family to Jallippati, said the road they passed was full of rocks and potholes and slippery at places. However, they managed to take him safely to the hospital where he is undergoing treatment.
Another person from the tribal colony, R. Talking to -AnyTV News, Muthuswamy said, “There is no connectivity road here and neither do we have a PHC to meet the immediate medical needs of the people. It is difficult to take a sick person to the foothills for treatment and there is a possibility of slipping.” It is more. The forest department should build a new road so that at least for medical emergencies, vehicular movement can be done.”
When contacted, Forest Department officials said that the tribal settlement of Mayammal is in the core area of the Tiger Reserve and it is very difficult to get permission to cut the road. Department officials said that they would send a proposal to cut the road to the government.
It may be noted that there are 70 families in the Islatt settlement deep in the ATR and if one becomes unwell and falls into bed, the only option is to carry a cloth cradle.
