New Delhi. The Indian cricket team going on Sri Lanka tour is expected to be announced today. After winning the ICC T20 World Cup, Rohit Sharma said goodbye to this format and now different news are coming out about who will be the captain in his place. Earlier it was reported that Hardik Pandya would be given this responsibility but Suryakumar Yadav’s name has suddenly come into discussion. The selectors are considering making him the captain till the 2026 T20 World Cup.
The Indian team will play a series of 3 T20 and 3 ODI matches on the Sri Lanka tour from 27 July to 7 August. There is a consideration of appointing different captains for both the formats. The team’s new coach Gautam Gambhir had already made it clear that he would like to see different captains for each format. Hardik has asked for rest from ODIs due to personal reasons and due to his in and out of T20 matches due to injury, the selectors are considering Suryakumar as the first choice as captain.
Indian team’s explosive batsman Suryakumar Yadav is being considered to be made the captain of this format till the next T20 World Cup i.e. 2026. Hardik Pandya was considered the natural choice due to being the vice-captain till now, but due to his continuous injuries and sitting out, the selectors and the new head coach want to give this responsibility to Suryakumar. Suryakumar, who captained India in T20 Internationals against Australia and South Africa last year, is the first choice of coach Gautam Gambhir and selection committee chairman Ajit Agarkar.
