Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting started crying during an interview while paying tribute to his former teammate Shane Warne. Warne died of a heart attack on Friday (March 4). The legendary spinner breathed his last at his villa in Koh Samui, Thailand. Police said no foul play was suspected in the death of the 52-year-old as he died of a heart attack.
The sudden demise of Warne shook the cricketing world. People all over the world expressed their grief. Warne played a total of 145 Tests in a career spanning 15 years. He has taken 708 wickets during this period. Ponting said he was shocked when he got the news of Warne’s death when he woke up the next morning. It still doesn’t seem easy for them to admit that their former partner and good friend is no more.
Ponting said, “Like other people in the world, I was shocked to hear this news. When I woke up in the morning, I came to know about it. I went to bed last night thinking that I should take my daughters to netball.” But when I woke up everything had changed. It took me hours to digest this news. Warne was a part of my life.”
The great Australia captain heaped praise on Warne and said that he has never played with a better and more competitive bowler than him. He said, “He will be counted as one of the greatest if not the greatest of all time in the game. I have never played with a better and more competitive bowler than him. He changed spin bowling and revolutionized it.”
Earlier on Saturday, Ponting made a post on social media for Warne. He wrote, “It’s hard to put into words. I first met him when I was 15 in the academy. He gave me my nickname (Punter). We were teammates for over a decade. See all the ups and downs together. He was someone you could always rely on. The greatest bowler I’ve ever played with or against.”
