Rio de Janeiro. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a visit to five countries these days. He has reached Brazil at the fourth stop of his visit, where he attended the 17th BRICS summit held at Rio de Janeiro. He expressed his heartfelt gratitude to Brazilian President Luiz Eneasio Lula de Silva for the brilliant event of the conference. He said that cooperation under the BRICS headed by Brazil has received new speed and energy, and appreciated President Lula’s foresight and his unwavering commitment.
Prime Minister Modi greeted President Prabovo Subiano on joining Indonesia’s BRICS family on behalf of India. He said that Global South often suffered a victim of double parameters. Whether it is about development, distribution of resources or safety topics, the interests of Global South have not got priority. Global South never got anything on topics like climate finance, sustainable development and technology.
He said that two-thirds of humanity has not received adequate representation in global institutions built in the 20th century. Countries which have a major contributor to today’s global economy have not been put on the platform to make decisions. This is not only a question of representation, but also a question of reliability and effectiveness. Without global South, these institutions look the same, just like mobile has a SIM, but not a network. These institutes are unable to deal with the challenges of the 21st century. These institutions have no solution regarding the ongoing struggles, epidemic, economic crisis, or new emerging challenges in cyber and space.
PM Modi said that today the world needs a new multi -polar and inclusive world system. It will have to be started with extensive improvement in global institutions. Improvements should not only be symbolic, but also show their real effect. Governance structure, voting rights and leadership posts should change. The challenges of the countries of Global South should give priority in policy making.
He said that the expansion of the BRICS, the association of new friends, is a proof that the BRICS is an organization that has the ability to change themselves over time. Now we have to show this will power for reforms in institutions like United Nations Security Council, WTO and multilateral development bank. Technology updates are updated every week in the AI era. In such a situation, it is not acceptable for global institution not to be updated even once in 80 years. He said that the 21st century software cannot be run with the 20th century type rights.
The Prime Minister said that India has always considered its responsibility to rise above its interests and work in the interest of humanity. We are fully committed to making creative contribution on all subjects in association with BRICS countries.
