Rohan Bopanna and Divij Sharan needed victories for India to reach Davis Cup World Group 1. Both the players saved three match points on the court of Delhi Gymkhana after beating Friedrich Nielsen and Mikel Torpigaard in a three-set fight to secure India a place in the World Group.
Bopanna-Sharan, playing their first Devic Cup match since February 2019, defeated Nielsen-Torpigaard 6-7(3), 6-4, 7-6(4) in a 118-minute clash. After losing the first set in the tie-breaker, Bopanna broke Nielsen’s serve in the very first game of the second set to win the second set. The score was 5-6 in the third set and Divij trailed 0-40 on his serve. Denmark had three match points, but the Dennis team could not redeem three points and India got an unassailable 3-0 lead.
Ramkumar won
In the first reverse singles, Ramkumar Ramanathan defeated Ingildson 5-7, 7-5, 10-7 to give India a 4-0 victory. Ramanathan was on the verge of defeat in the first reverse singles. Ingildson got several chances in the second set. On the scores of 5-6 and 30-30, he made two consecutive double faults and gave Ramkumar the set. There was a struggle in the Super Tiebreaker too, but Ramkumar lost the match. The need to play the insignificant second contra single was not felt. During this, the legendary Vijay Amritraj was honored for his brilliant performance in the Davis Cup.
