Forest fires in Greece
Athens: At least one person has died in a massive forest fire in the northern region of the Greek capital Athens. According to officials, strong winds were hampering the work of hundreds of firefighters spraying water from aircraft, due to which many people were evacuated from the affected areas. The fire department said that firefighters have recovered the body of a person from a burnt building in the Vrilissia suburb.
Greece on high alert
According to the fire department, the forest fire broke out on Sunday near Lake Marathon, about 35 km northeast of Athens, and spread through Mount Pendeli to the northern suburbs of the capital. The fire engulfed many homes and business establishments located near the lake. A ‘high alert’ has been issued in Greece. However, the fire is reported to have been brought under control to some extent due to a decrease in the intensity of the wind late on Monday night.

Fire department spokesman Colonel Vasilios Vathrakogiannis said firefighters were no longer battling “huge flames in multiple locations” but in one location. The fires sent a plume of smoke into the skies over Athens, while parts of the capital faced power cuts. Officials said at least 18 people were injured in the blaze. Greece’s National Observatory said late Monday that according to satellite images, the fire had affected about 25,000 acres.
