Tesla standard e-car can be found in the Indian market in two years
New Delhi, April 21 (IANS)| Tesla is planning to make its first all-electric car in India this year. Under this, Elon Musk’s company has hired top executives of the country, who will take charge of the operations while staying in India. After Musk talked about bringing Tesla to India, Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa announced in February that the US-based electric vehicle and clean energy company would set up its production facility here. Tesla has already registered its office in Bengaluru.
IIM Bangalore alumnus Manuj Khurana for higher positions has been appointed as Head of Policy and Business Development for India Operations. The company has appointed Nishant as the charging manager who will lead the supercharging, destination charging and home charging business for Tesla India. He was previously Head of Charging Infrastructure and Energy Storage at Ather Energy, a domestic electric vehicle company.
On January 12, Yediyurappa had tweeted from his official handle that Tesla would start its India operations with an R&D unit in Bengaluru. Breaking the silence after this news came, Tesla had spoken of coming to India by registering as a company in Bangalore. Musk said on January 13 that “he is ready to deliver on his promise to have electric cars on India’s roads.”
Last week Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari said he has invited Tesla to start manufacturing EVs in India. During his address at Raisina Dialogue 2021, he said that this is a golden opportunity for the company to start manufacturing in India. “I had a video conference with Tesla management. I suggested to them that this is a golden opportunity for them to start manufacturing in India,” he said. Gadkari also said that he has assured the company that the government will help them set up industrial clusters in the country.
Expressing confidence in the Indian EV makers, he said that “Indian products are also improving and within two years we will have Tesla standard e-vehicles in the Indian market.” “That’s why I suggest in the interest of Tesla that you start manufacturing in India at the earliest. It will be beneficial for you,” the minister said.
