Controversy over Lancet’s report of orphans in Corona epidemic
The National Commission for Children has strongly objected to the figures of the international organization Lancet on the report of children who lost their parents during the Corona period. For this, the commission has written a letter to the editor of Lancet, asking it to submit the basis of data and research report within seven days. The report in the Lancet claimed to have lost the parents of 19 lakh children.
The central government is working closely with the states under the supervision of the Supreme Court in the case of children orphaned due to corona infection in India. For this, the commission makes available the latest data to the Supreme Court every month. The commission claims that due to intensive monitoring and continuous work, the data of such children is transparent and in sync with the states. So there can be no possibility of scope in this.
According to the data received from other sources being collected by the commission, the total number of children who lost their parents and single guardians due to reasons other than corona infection from 1 April 2020 to 15 February 2022 is 1,53,827. In this, the number of children being orphaned is 10,386. While 1,42,949 have lost a parent. 492 children have become completely destitute.
On the other hand, CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury also attacked the government on the Lancet report and asked the Modi government to fix accountability.
