Barabanki. Uttar Pradesh is famous for mango farming but now the gardeners here have started litchi farming. Farmers get very good profits in litchi farming. Litchi farming has changed the fortunes of Kazim Sajjad, a resident of Zaidpur in Barabanki district. He had ordered litchi saplings from Bihar 15 years ago. Now he is cultivating litchi in about 5 bighas. He is earning a profit of three to four lakh rupees every year.
Kazim Sajjad told that in his orchard, both Bihari and Chinese variety of litchi is cultivated. In 2.5 to 3 months of cultivation, he earns a profit of around 3 to 4 lakhs. It does not require much effort and along with mango cultivation, litchi cultivation is also done easily. The demand for Bihari as well as Chinese litchi has increased a lot in the markets, that is why farmers are now paying more attention to litchi cultivation.
Farmer Kazim Sajjad said that we have been cultivating litchi for about 15 years. We had ordered its sapling from Muzaffarpur in Bihar. After planting it, it showed good profit. People like the taste of litchi from here, so along with Barabanki district, traders from nearby districts also come here to buy litchi.
Demand for Chinese litchi
He further said, ‘We have two types of litchis here, one is Shahi litchi and the other is Chinese. The special thing about this is that Shahi litchi is a bit sour in taste and it ripens late. On the other hand, Chinese litchi is sweeter and ripens quickly. The litchis that are being produced at this time are also selling at a good rate.
He said, ‘If we talk about the cost of this farming, it requires a little more water and pesticides have to be sprayed from time to time, so the cost comes to about 80 to 90 thousand rupees. If we talk about profit, then three to four lakh rupees can be saved easily.’
