New Delhi: The Mumbai police sealed a meat shop in Navi Mumbai’s CBD Belapur after a goat brought there for halal was found to have a religious name written on it, a police official said on Sunday. The action was taken based on a complaint lodged on Saturday, following which the shop was shut and a case was registered against the owner and two employees.
According to the complaint, 22 goats were brought to the shop for halal on Eid, one of which had the name of Ram written on it. The complainant also accused the three persons of animal cruelty. The accused have been identified as Mohammed Shafi Sheikh, Sajid Shafi Sheikh and Kuyyam. They have been charged under Section 295 (A) and Section 34 of the Indian Penal Code and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act for hurting religious sentiments.
The incident started when a goat with the name “Ram” written on it was allegedly brought for halal on the occasion of Bakrid. Hindu organisations immediately rushed to the spot and intervened. Following their protest, the police filed an FIR. Preliminary information suggests that a goat with the name “Ram” written on it was put up for sale at Goodluck Mutton Shop in Sector One of CBD Belapur in Navi Mumbai. In response to objections raised by Hindu groups, the police have detained the shop owner and registered charges under several sections of the IPC.
