New Delhi. There is a long list of leaders leaving Congress who have left their ties with the weak party after the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. These leaders include Congress leaders from Jammu and Kashmir in the north to Kerala in the south. The reason for all these leaders leaving Congress were the shortcomings in the Congress leadership and the functioning of the Congress.
Ghulam Nabi Azad:
Senior Congress leader and former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and Ghulam Nabi Azad, who has held many important responsibilities at the Center and in the Congress Party organization, was raising questions on the party leadership and decision-making style in the party and on this issue he along with other 22 Congress leaders. Also wrote a letter to Congress President Sonia Gandhi. After waiting for a long time for his demands to be implemented within the party, Ghulam Nabi Azad finally resigned from the Congress Party by writing a long letter and formed his own new party. Ghulam Nabi Azad resigned from Congress in the year 2022 and formed his new party this year.
RPN Singh:
RPN Singh, a Congress leader from UP and a minister at the Center and who held the charge of Jharkhand in the organization within the Congress, left the Congress before the UP assembly elections and associated himself with the Bharatiya Janata Party. RPN Singh was also angry with the working style of the party. BJP has nominated RPN Singh for Rajya Sabha.
Jitin Prasad:
Jitin Prasad, who was a central minister and MP from Congress, joined BJP in the year 2022. BJP made Jitin Prasad a minister in the UP government and in place of Varun Gandhi in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, BJP has made Jitin Prasad the Bharatiya Janata Party candidate. Jitin Prasad was a minister at the Center in the Manmohan Singh government.
Sanjay Singh :
Sanjay Singh, MP and MLA from Amethi, also thought it better to leave Congress and join BJP.
Ashok Chavan:
Ashok Chavan, one of the big cities of Congress in Maharashtra, former Chief Minister and former Maharashtra President of Congress and MP, resigned from Congress in the year 2024 and joined BJP. Ashok Chavan was also angry with the working style of Congress.
Naveen Jindal:
Naveen Jindal, known as an industrialist and Congress leader, has left Congress and joined BJP in the year 2024. Naveen Jindal has been an MP from Kurukshetra on Congress ticket and BJP has also made Naveen Jindal its candidate from Kurukshetra in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Ravneet Bittu:
Ravneet Singh Bittu, Congress MP from Ludhiana seat of Punjab, left Congress and joined BJP in the year 2024. BJP has made Ravneet Singh Bittu its Lok Sabha candidate from Ludhiana in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Ravneet Singh Bittu is a big name in Punjab politics and is the grandson of former Chief Minister of Punjab and Congress leader Beant Singh.
Amarinder Singh:
Amarinder Singh, the former Chief Minister of Punjab and close to the Gandhi family, one of the biggest cities of Congress in Punjab, also got angry with the working style of Congress, first left Congress and then formed his new party and finally joined BJP again. In the year 2021, Congress made Charanjit Singh Channi the Chief Minister of Punjab in place of Amarinder Singh and after this Amarinder Singh first left the Congress and then formed his new party Punjab Lok Congress and later merged this party with BJP in the year 2022.
Preneet Kaur:
Amarinder Singh’s wife and senior Congress leader Preneet Kaur also joined BJP in the year 2024, in fact in the year 2023, Congress had suspended her from the party for supporting Amarinder Singh. Preneet Kaur is an MP from Patiala and had won the election from Patiala in 2019 on a Congress ticket. This time BJP has made Preneet Kaur the party candidate from Patiala.
Tom Vadakkan:
Tom Badukkan, who was a Congress spokesperson, left the Congress and joined the BJP in March 2019. Tom Vadakkan had cited Congress’ stand on Balakot air strike as the main reason for leaving Congress. Tom Vadakkan is the national spokesperson of BJP.
Sushmita Dev:
Sushmita Dev, who had been an MP from Assam and was associated with the Congress for a long time, had left the Congress and joined the Trinamool Congress. Sushmita Dev is currently a Rajya Sabha MP. She had also been the President of National Mahila Congress in Congress.
Priyanka Chaturvedi:
Priyanka Chaturvedi, who was a spokesperson in Congress, had left Congress and joined Shiv Sena. Later Shiv Sena nominated her as Rajya Sabha MP and Priyanka Chaturvedi still holds the post.
Anil Antony:
Anil Antony, son of senior Congress leader and former Defense Minister Ek Entri, had resigned from the Congress in January 2023. There was pressure on him to delete a tweet. While resigning from the party, Anil Antony had said that he was being pressurized with intolerance to delete a tweet and this was being done by those who talk about standing for freedom of speech. He further said that I refused to delete the tweet. Along with this, Anil had also tweeted his resignation letter. Later Anil Antony joined BJP and this time he is also a Lok Sabha candidate from Kerala.
Gaurav Vallabh:
Gaurav Vallabh, who had been the spokesperson of Congress and had tried his luck in the assembly elections on Congress ticket from Jharkhand and Rajasthan, finally resigned from Congress and joined BJP. Gaurav Vallabh, in his two-page letter, mentioned his displeasure over the party’s stand on the consecration of Lord Ram in the Ram temple and the continuous targeting of the country’s wealth creators and resigned from the party. Gaurav Vallabh used to continuously present his views on economic policies on behalf of Congress from the Congress platform.
Jyotiraditya Scindia:
Big face of Madhya Pradesh politics and former Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia also joined BJP after getting angry with the party. Scindia’s displeasure was more related to the politics of Congress in Madhya Pradesh and the decisions of the party. Jyotiraditya Scindia had resigned from Congress in March 2020 and in the same month he joined BJP. Later BJP nominated him to Rajya Sabha and then made him a minister at the Centre. Jyotiraditya Scindia is also BJP’s candidate in this Lok Sabha election.
Suresh Pachauri:
Suresh Pachauri, one of the big faces of Madhya Pradesh, who was associated with Congress for 50 years, joined BJP in March 2024. Suresh Pachauri was elected to Rajya Sabha four times on Congress ticket and had also been a minister at the Centre. During his association with Congress, Suresh Pachauri contested Lok Sabha elections once and Assembly elections once but lost both the times.
Arjun Modhwadia:
Former Gujarat Congress President and Porbandar MLA Arjun Modhwadia, who publicly questioned the Congress’s stand on the consecration of Lord Ram in the Ram temple in Ayodhya, resigned from the Congress in March 2024 and joined the BJP. Arjun Modhwadia was associated with the Congress Party for 40 years.
Milind Deora:
Milind Deora, who was a minister at the Center in the Manmohan Singh government, left the Congress and joined Shiv Sena in January 2024. Shiv Sena later made him its candidate for Rajya Sabha and Milind Deora was elected unopposed to Rajya Sabha. Milind Deora was also among those Congress leaders who were angry with the working style of the party.
Sanjay Nirupam:
Sanjay Nirupam, who was the President of Mumbai Congress and MP from Mumbai on Congress ticket, was expelled due to anti-party activities. For the past few days, Sanjay Nirupam had been continuously making statements against the party’s decisions, especially against the party’s decision on seat distribution in the Lok Sabha elections in Mumbai. Baba Siddiqui, who was a minister in the Maharashtra government, left the Congress in February 2024 and joined Ajit Pawar’s NCP.
Vibhakar Shastri:
Vibhakar Shastri, grandson of Lal Bahadur Shastri, left Congress and joined BJP in February 2024.
Acharya Pramod Krishnam:
Acharya Pramod Krishnam, considered close to Priyanka Gandhi in the Congress and who advocated making Sachin Pilot the Chief Minister of Rajasthan, was suspended by the Congress for making anti-party statements. Acharya Pramod Krishnam was also unhappy with the stand of the Congress Party in the consecration of Lord Ram and opposed it.
Rohan Gupta:
Rohan Gupta, who was the head of Congress’s social media department, recently resigned from all Congress posts. Congress had made Rohan Gupta the Congress candidate from the Gujarat Lok Sabha seat, but citing his father’s health, Rohan Gupta withdrew his candidature. After this, some reactions were made against him by the party leaders and hence he appealed to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge. Resigned from all Congress posts by writing nomination papers.
