The mastermind of the 26/11 attack, Tehwwur Rana will be in custody of NIA 18 days, special court ordered

New Delhi. India has got a big success in extradition of Tawwur Hussain Rana, an important conspirator of 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) formally detained Rana after a special court order on Thursday evening. After extradition from the US, Rana was brought to India amidst tight security by a joint team of NIA and NSG at IGI Airport, New Delhi. Soon after, he was produced in a special court of NIA at Patiala House, from where he has been sent to custody for 18 days.
According to NIA officials, the 2008 attacks will be investigated in depth from Tahwwur Rana during custody. 166 people were killed and more than 238 were injured in this deadly attack. The agency hopes that Rana’s arrest will also reveal information about other faces involved in the conspiracy of the attack.
India had made several legal and diplomatic efforts in the US for Rana’s extradition. Rana’s final attempt to stop extradition in the case reached the US Supreme Court also failed. This extradition was possible with the coordination of the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India and Ministry of Home Affairs.
The NIA worked in the entire extradition campaign with the FBI, the US Department of Justice (USDOJ) and other international agencies. The agency described it as a “important achievement” in India’s global fight against terrorism.
The role of Tawwur Rana regarding the 26/11 attack was under the scanner for a long time. Now that he is in India, it is expected that many unresolved questions can be revealed.
