The enthusiasm of domestic air travelers continues across the country. Indian airlines carried more than 1.29 crore passengers to destinations in July 2024, which is a growth of more than 7.3 percent on an annual basis. According to data released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Monday, air traffic in July was lower than in June this year, when 1.32 crore passengers flew. IndiGo continued to dominate the domestic air traffic sector and its market share increased to 62 percent in July. On the other hand, Air India’s share declined to 14.3 percent.
Domestic air passenger traffic in seven months
According to the DGCA, domestic air passenger traffic grew 4.7 per cent to over 9.23 crore in January-July. During the seven-month period under review, budget airline IndiGo carried over 5.61 crore passengers, with a market share of 60.8 per cent. It was followed by Tata Group-run Air India which carried 1.25 crore passengers, with a market share of 13.6 per cent. Vistara recorded a 9.6 per cent market share with a market share of 89 lakh.

According to the news, according to DGCA data, Vistara’s domestic market share increased to 10 percent last month. The share of AIX Connect and SpiceJet declined to 4.5 percent and 3.1 percent respectively. Apart from this, the share of Akasa Air and Alliance Air fell to 4.7 percent and 0.9 percent respectively. DGCA said that during January-July, 2024, domestic airlines carried 923.35 lakh people as against 881.94 lakh in the same period a year ago. In this way, the number of passengers registered an annual growth of 4.70 percent and a monthly growth of 7.33 percent.
Air passenger traffic in India
According to one estimate, India’s domestic air passenger traffic is expected to reach 300 million by 2030, almost double the 153 million in 2023. This year, it was said that the government has either modernised or added 75 airports, waterdromes and heliports in the last 10 years, compared to 74 airports in the previous 65 years. This number is expected to rise above 200 by 2030.
