Have you heard about a village where earlier hundreds of people lived? But now only one family is left? That is, the only village in the country where only one family lives? Surely you might not have heard, but there is a similar village in Nalbari district of Assam, whose name is Bardhanara. Actually, people continuously migrate from different parts of the country. Some leave their villages and cities in search of jobs and others in pursuit of studies. At the same time, some people migrate from villages to cities due to lack of basic facilities. There is a similar story of Bardhanara.
Due to the apathy of the administration, the people here were forced to leave their own village. This used to be a prosperous village 30 to 40 years ago. But in the 2011 census, the population of this village remained at only 16 people. Due to dilapidated roads and lack of other facilities, now only one family of five members is left in Bardhanara village. Now only Bimal Deka, his wife Anima and their three children – Naren, Deepali and Seuti live in this village of Ghograpara circle, 12 km from the district headquarters Nalbari. There is a bikeable road 2 kilometers away from this village.
Deepali, daughter of Bimal Deka, said that we have to walk 2 km through water and muddy roads to reach the nearest bikeable road to our school and college. Boat ride is most suitable during monsoon. The children’s mother Anima does the work of steering the boat. Despite such difficult circumstances, the family provided proper education to all three children, of which Deepali and Naren are graduates, while Seuti is pursuing higher secondary. You will be surprised to know, but let us tell you that even electricity is not available in their village. In such a situation, children study in the light of kerosene lamp.
All roads get submerged in rain!
During the monsoon season, when there is heavy rain, this village is completely cut off. To go from one place to another one has to use a boat. People of nearby villages claim that the condition of this village was not pathetic till a few decades ago. A few decades ago, former Chief Minister Bishnu Ram Medhi inaugurated the road leading to this village. But later, lack of maintenance and apathy of the administration worsened the situation here. The floods here made the situation worse. If the government builds roads and provides basic facilities then the people here can return to their villages again.
