The Lanka Premier League has announced the suspension of the Dambulla Thunders franchise with immediate effect, SLC said in a statement. The decision has been taken following recent developments related to the ownership of the franchise and legal issues against Imperial Sports Group founder Tamim Rehman. The Dambulla franchise was bought by Bangladeshi entrepreneur-led Imperial Sports Group in April. However, the actual allegations against him are not yet clear. SLC said that although the allegations against Rahman are not specific, the integrity and smooth functioning of the Lanka Premier League is of utmost importance.
According to the statement, the purpose of canceling the franchise is to maintain the values and reputation of the LPL, ensuring that all participants adhere to the highest standards of conduct and sportsmanship. Rahman was being investigated under two provisions of the country’s Sports Act related to attempted match-fixing and betting. LPL is scheduled to take place between July 1 and 21. Let us tell you that Sri Lanka is the first South Asian country to criminalize match-fixing and corruption in sports when it passed a law against this menace in 2019. Anyone found guilty can be jailed for up to 10 years and may also have to pay a fine.
