Often such patients come to Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences for treatment who are in the last stage of their disease or whose treatment the doctors in other hospitals have refused to treat. However, there was a first such case in AIIMS when the doctors in the emergency of AIIMS had refused to treat a patient suffering from blood cancer and the family started returning home with the patient. But then the initiative of an AIIMS doctor not only saved the life of the patient, but today when the patient has completely recovered, this incident has become an example for other patients and AIIMS staff.
This is the case of Harvinder Kumar who lives in Aligarh, UP. Harvinder was brought to Delhi AIIMS after he was diagnosed with blood cancer. He was suffering from a rare and dangerous disease called promyelocytic leukemia. The patient’s condition was so bad that blood clots had formed, hemoglobin had reached 4 and the heart was on the verge of failure. The patient neither had a blood donor nor money and the family was taking the almost dead patient home from the emergency, but then suddenly the AIIMS doctor came forward like God for the patient.

News18hindi Talking to IANS, patient Harvinder said, ‘This incident is from 2019 when he was suddenly diagnosed with blood cancer. After the diagnosis of the disease, he was first treated in Bareilly but when the doctors refused, he was brought to Delhi AIIMS with the help of a relative. He was admitted in the emergency department. His condition was so critical that he was almost declared dead. When he could not find a way and no family member was with him, the same relative took him out of the hospital and started taking him home, but then a doctor working in the emergency department noticed me.’
Harvinder says, ‘That doctor was Vivek Kumar Singh who was the Medical Social Welfare Officer in AIIMS. When he took all the information from us, he told us not to go back home and he talked to Dr. Mahapatra, Dr. Tulika Seth, Dr. Mukul Agarwal, Dr. Tejaswini. This team of doctors started my treatment. Not only this, when I did not have a single penny, Dr. Vivek Singh also arranged money from the social welfare fund of AIIMS for my treatment.’
Harvinder was admitted from the emergency ward to the general ward and after several months of treatment and chemotherapy, Harvinder finally recovered completely. AIIMS Director Dr. M Srinivas also praised the team for the doctors’ efforts to save the poor patient by treating him and also praised the medical staff for their determination towards treating the patients.
