Even today, the flag was hoisted at 12:01 midnight at Jhanda Chowk located in Bhatta Bazaar of Purnia. Despite the rain, thousands of people including MP Pappu Yadav, Sadar MLA Vijay Khemka, Mayor Vibha Kumari, social worker Anil Chaudhary, Prahlad Kumar Munna were present on this occasion.

Family members of freedom fighters hoist the flag- Vipul Kumar Singh, grandson of freedom fighter Rameshwar Prasad Singh, hoisted the flag at 12:01 at night. After this, people sang the national anthem and shouted Bharat Mata Ki Jai. Vipul Singh, who hoisted the flag, said that as soon as Mountbatten announced India’s independence on 14 August 1947, many freedom fighters here who were listening to this announcement on the radio, hoisted the national flag at this very place, Bhatta Bazaar Jhanda Chowk, at night. This tradition has been going on every year since that day. It is said that after Attari Wagah border in the entire country, Purnia is the second place where flag hoisting takes place at midnight.

There is a demand for giving state status
The people of Purnia are constantly demanding to give it state status. Meanwhile, Sadar MLA Vijay Khemka said that this is a very historical place. He has raised the demand of giving it state status in the House many times. He will try for it again. He said that people are very attached to this place. This tells how big was Purnia’s contribution in the freedom struggle.
